Strategic Plan

Stragegic PlanThe dominant discussion of the past few years has been the economy. Like you, SHIM has been considering the impact of the continued economic downturn on the people we serve, and on the agency itself.

We’ve posed the questions:

  • How have the people SHIM serves been impacted by the economic downturn?
  • What programs and services are needed in the community – or may be needed in the future?
  • How can SHIM ensure that we have the necessary resources to be able to meet those needs?

To be better able to answer these important questions, and to position ourselves to continue to successfully serve the community in the future, SHIM has recently completed the process of developing a three-year Strategic Plan.  The main points of this plan are outlined below and will help us shape the direction of the organization in the years ahead.

Goal 1: Enhance Direct Assistance programs to meet basic client needs.
  • Increase saturation of Direct Assistance clients within existing SHIM service area and explore selective opportunities for geographic expansion.
  • Implement triage case management for families in crisis and explore enhancement of Direct Assistance programs (including sliding fee scales and cash assistance).
  • Expand full complement of Direct Assistance program offerings to all SHIM locations.
Goal 2: Enhance Family Support programs to bridge clients toward self-sufficiency.
  • Expand Family Support program offerings to include employment support and counseling services.
  • Develop targeted programming for special populations, including refugees and seniors.
  • Increase saturation of youth development programming and explore options for geographic and age expansions.
  • Expand Family Support Center and ensure sustainability.
Goal 3: Build the infrastructure to support the organization into the future.
  • Evaluate and update policies and procedures related to governance, human resources, financial management, and outcomes measurement.
  • Implement appropriate technology to support growth.
  • Position SHIM as conduit for “faith in action” on the part of religious organizations and their members.
  • Enhance volunteer engagement opportunities to support agency operations and growth.
  • Identify new Prospect Park facility and upgrade Bethel Park facility.
Goal 4: Ensure organizational financial stability.
  • Expand Development staff to implement expanded fundraising program.
  • Increase Annual Fundraising and implement long-term planned giving program.
  • Explore feasibility for and conduct capital/endowment campaign to support infrastructure needs and long-term financial sustainability.
  • Explore and implement social enterprises in years four and five.
